Backup & Restore

Protect your Decision Library.

The Executive Decision Book™ stores your decision information locally in your browser.

Backup and Restore gives you a way to create a separate copy of the decisions you have archived into your Decision Library and restore those archived records when required.

Important

Your decision in progress is not included in a Decision Library backup.

A Decision Library backup contains only decisions that have been completed and archived into Decision Memory.

The decision you are currently working on is stored locally in the browser, but it is not included in the .sodbackup file.

If you clear the browser’s site data, use a private browsing session that is later closed, or otherwise remove the local data before completing and archiving that decision, the decision in progress may be lost.

Archive an important decision into Decision Memory before relying on a Decision Library backup to protect it.

What Is Backed Up

Your archived Decision Library.

When you select Back Up Decision Library in the Executive Decision Book™, the application creates a backup containing the decisions currently archived in your Decision Library.

The backup includes the information contained within those archived decision records, which may include:

  • the decision question;
  • decision owners;
  • options considered;
  • evidence;
  • recorded outcome; and
  • delivery conditions and other information contained in the archived record.

The decision currently in progress is not included.

The Backup File

A copy you control.

The backup is downloaded to your device as a file with a name similar to:

Six-Other-Days-Decision-Library-YYYY-MM-DD.sodbackup

The backup file is stored on your own computer or device.

Creating the backup does not upload the decision records in that file to Six Other Days.

The .sodbackup file is a readable file and is not encrypted.

Because it may contain the full content of your archived decision records, you are responsible for storing the downloaded backup securely and controlling who can access it.

Treat a Decision Library backup with the same care as the decision information it contains.

Restoring Your Decision Library

Restore archived decisions when you need them.

To restore archived decision records, use Restore Decision Library in the Executive Decision Book™ and select a valid .sodbackup file.

Before a restore is completed:

  • the backup file is checked;
  • invalid or damaged files are rejected;
  • you are shown how many records will be added and how many existing records will be replaced;
  • you are asked to confirm the restore; and
  • the existing Decision Library is automatically backed up.

Restoring a Decision Library backup adds its archived records to the Decision Library already held in the current browser.

Existing records are retained unless a record in the backup matches an existing record. Where a matching record exists, the version contained in the backup replaces that matching archived record.

If the restore fails, the existing stored Decision Library is not changed.

A restore does not replace or restore the decision currently in progress.

Moving Between Browsers or Devices

Your Decision Library does not synchronise automatically.

Decision information is stored locally in the browser you are using.

It does not automatically synchronise between browsers or devices.

To move your archived Decision Library manually:

  1. In the original browser, select Back Up Decision Library.
  2. Securely transfer the .sodbackup file to the browser or device you want to use.
  3. Sign in to the Executive Decision Book™ on that browser or device.
  4. Select Restore Decision Library.
  5. Select the backup file and review the restore information before confirming.

Using the Executive Decision Book™ on another browser or device is subject to the activation limits of your Individual Executive Licence.

Only archived Decision Library records move using this process; the decision currently in progress does not.

Browser Storage

Understand where your decisions are stored.

The Executive Decision Book™ stores both your current working decision and your Decision Library locally in the browser on book.sixotherdays.com.

This means that clearing the site’s browser data can remove locally stored decision information.

Private or incognito browsing should not be relied upon for retaining decision information after the private session ends.

A Decision Library backup protects the archived records contained in that backup.

It does not protect a decision that is still in progress.

If other people can access the same browser profile on a shared device, they may also be able to access locally stored decision information. Use an appropriately secured device and browser profile when working with information that should remain confidential.

Decision Brief

Exporting a decision is different from backing up your library.

Where available, the PDF Decision Brief creates an output of an individual decision for your own records or legitimate organisational use.

A Decision Library backup serves a different purpose: it creates a restorable copy of the archived records held in your Decision Library.
